Softball splits with Pioneers

Lakeland's softball team finished their spring trip by earning their first win of the season and splitting with the Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers. The scores of the games were a 9-0 win and an 8-5 defeat. In game 1, the Lakers wasted no time combining a Pioneer error with some key hits to take a 4-0 lead after 1 inning. Carmen Alvarez got things going with a walk. Peyton Trick followed with a single and then both runners advanced on a steal. Astianna Coppes then reached on an error as C. Alvarez scored. Coppes then stole 2nd base before Midaliz Alvarez knocked in both runs with a single. Abby Haydu then scored M. Alvarez with an RBI-triple. The Lakers scored 2 more runs in the 2nd inning as Coppes hit a 2-out single. M. Alvarez walked and Haydu then cracked a 2 RBI-double. Lakeland struck for 2 more runs in the 3rd inning as they took advantage of walks. Lillyan Agostine and M. Alvarez both walked before later scoring on a 2 RBI-single from Peyton Trick. The Lakers final run was scored in the 4th inning when Coppes reached on an error and advanced to second base. Coppes would later score on an RBI-single from Abby Haydu.

Leah Richter picked up the Lakers first win of the season as she pitched a 5 inning shutout allowing just 3 hits. Abby Haydu went 3 for 3 and was a home run short of the cycle as she added 4 RBI's. Peyton Trick recorded 2 hits and 2 RBI's while both Astianna Coppes and Midaliz Alvarez each recorded a hit and an RBI. Lillyan Agostine also added a hit in the Laker win.

In game 2, the Lakers would fall into an early 8-0 hole before battling back. Unfortunately the deficit was too big and the Lakers ran out of time. The Pioneers took advantage of Laker defensive miscues to build their lead through 2 innings. In the top of the 3rd inning, Lakeland began to chip away as they scored 2 runs. Emalee Harala started things with a walk and advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch. Megan Szczecinski would then walk and both would advance on a Carmen Alvarez hit that the defense could not handle. Astianna Coppes would follow with a sac fly scoring Harala. Szczecinski would later score on an RBI-single from Midaliz Alvarez. The Lakers would be held scoreless until the 6th inning when they would tack on 3 more runs. Lillyan Agostine got the inning going with a single. Szczecinski would later single and both runners would later score on a Peyton Trick hit that was misplayed. Trick would later score on a wild pitch. The Lakers were unable to push any runs across in the 7th inning as they fell to the Pioneers.

Midaliz Alvarez and Astianna Coppes both collected a hit and an RBI to lead the Lakers. Carmen Alvarez (2B), Lillyan Agostine, and Megan Szczecinski also added hits in the defeat. Peyton Trick took the tough luck loss on the mound as she pitched 6 innings and allowed 8 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits.
