Softball drops pair to Hawks

The Lakeland women's softball team played host to the Hocking Hawks today and dropped both ends of the doubleheader by the scores of 11-3 and 18-11. In game 1, the Lakers defense let them down as they allowed 9 unearned runs. After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the 1st inning, Lakeland took the lead in the home half of the inning. Peyton Trick got the Lakers going with a 1-out double. Trick advanced to 3rd on a single from Astianna Coppes. Coppes then stole second base and Trick came home on the throw. Midaliz Alvarez then knocked in Coppes with an RBI single. The Hawks would then explode for 8 runs in the top of the 2nd inning taking advantage of Laker errors. After expanding the Hawk lead to 11-2 in the top of the 5th, Lakeland would tack 1 run on in the home half of the 5th inning. Coppes would single and then be put out on a fielders choice from M. Alvarez. Abby Haydu would single before Lillyan Agostine scored M. Alvarez on an RBI single.

Astianna Coppes, Midaliz Alvarez, and Peyton Trick each collected 2 hits while M. Alvarez added an RBI. Lillyan Agostine had a hit and RBI while Abby Haydu, Reagan Hayes, and Lily Seay each singled in the loss. Peyton Trick was the tough luck loser on the mound hurling 5 innings and allowing 11 runs (2 earned) on 10 hits.

In the nightcap, the Lakers jumped out to an early lead, but could not hold it as they suffered the loss. Lakeland jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Carmen Alvarez walked before Peyton Trick singled and Astianna Coppes walked to load the bases. Midaliz Alvarez followed with an RBI-single. Abby Haydu then ripped a double to score Trick before Coppes was cut down at the plate. M. Alvarez later scored on a wild pitch before Reagan Hayes stroked an RBI-single to score Haydu. After the Hawks tied it at 4 in the top of the 2nd, the Lakers scored 4 more in the home half to take an 8-4 lead. In the second, Carmen Alvarez reached on an error and stole second base. C. Alvarez then scored on a Peyton Trick RBI-double. Astianna Coppes followed with an RBI-single before Midaliz Alvarez ripped a 2-run homer. The Hawks would chip away and then take a 9-8 lead in the top of the 4th inning. Carmen Alvarez would knot the score at 9 in the bottom of the 5th inning with a solo blast. The Hawks would then take control of the game scoring 7 runs in the 6th and 2 more in the 7th inning. Lakeland would score 2 runs in the 7th inning on a 2-run home run from Astianna Coppes before eventually falling.

Astianna Coppes went 3-4 with a home run and 3 RBI's while Midaliz Alvarez went 3-5  (2B, HR) with 3 RBI's. Peyton Trick and Reagan Hayes each collected 3 hits and an RBI  while Abby Haydu added 2 hits and an RBI. Athena Stute, Lillyan Agostine, and Carmen Alvarez each collected a hit in the loss. Leah Richter took the loss on the mound pitching 6 innings and allowed 17 runs (12 earned). Athena Stute relieved and pitched 1 inning and allowed 1 run.

Next Up: The Lakers are scheduled to host Edison State on Wednesday (4/3) in a 3:00 pm doubleheader at Laker Field.
