Women's basketball sweeps season series vs Skippers

The Lakeland women's basketball team traveled to Port Huron, MI tonight to face the St. Clair County Skippers. Lakeland wasted little time in the rematch as they overwhelmed the Skippers 21-6 in the first quarter and then cruised to an 81-41 victory. With the win, the Lakers improved to 5-0 on the season. The Skippers scored the first bucket of the game before Madison Fueger tied it at 2 with a short jumper on an assist from Gianna Pegoraro. The next bucket wasn't scored until the 6:46 mark when Delaney Sullivan connected on a layup and a 4-2 Laker lead.  After that, the Lakers exploded. After a Skipper foul, Pegoraro hit a big 3-pointer for a 7-2 lead. After a St. Clair miss, Sullivan connected on another bucket. Pegoraro then collected a steal and Makayla Gordon connected on a short jumper to extend the Lakers lead to 11-2. Later in the period, Pegoraro stole another ball and scored on a layup. Fueger followed suit with a steal and a basket of her own on St. Clair's next possession to give Lakeland a 15-2 lead (13-0 run) in a little over 3 minute span. Mya James connected on two 3-pointers to close out the Lakers scoring in the first quarter. The Lakers were never challenged the rest of the game.

Lakeland had five players finish in double digit scoring. Gianna Pegoraro led the way with 17 points and 11 rebounds while also adding 5 steals and 4 assists. Makayla Gordon finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds while Madison Fueger added 14 points for the Lakers. Mya James and Zion Fussell each scored 11 points on the night. Fussell also added 5 steals. Delaney Sullivan collected 6 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Brandy Smith chipped in with 7 points for the win.

Next Up: The Lakers game tomorrow has been cancelled. Their next game is scheduled for Monday night (11/21) at Laker Gym in a rematch against the Jamestown Jayhawks. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 pm. The Lakers defeated the Jayhawks on the road opening night by a score of 68-63.
