Laker women's soccer tops Titans

The Lakeland women's soccer team played host to the Terra State Titans today and came away with a 6-0 victory at Laker Field. Lakeland got started early as Mercedes Tabler scored on a a cross from Kassie Emmett to stake the Lakers to a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the game. Two minutes later, Emmett was at it again as she crossed a ball that Christina Vanah finished on a volley. Two minutes after that, the Lakers struck again as Ashlen Horowski stole the ball from a Terra State defender and was able to maneuver around the keeper for a 3-0 lead. The Lakers Domunique Wright gave the Lakers a 4-0 advantage 4 minutes later as she stole the ball from a Titan defender and tucked it past the keeper from 17 yards away. Molly Vitcusky got on the scoring sheet 10 minutes later as she she took a pass from Lila Malkamaki and rifled a shot past the Titan keeper from 22 yards out. Lakeland finished out the scoring as Wright collected her second goal of the match on a pass from Vitcusky.

Lakeland led the Titans in shots on net 16-4 and held a 6-1 advantage in corners. Kassie Emmett recorded 5 shots while Molly Vitcusky, Christina Vanah and Domunique Wright each recorded 4 shots. Wright finished with 2 goals while Molly Vitcusky finished with a goal and an assist. Kassie Emmett picked up two assists in the win. Mercedes Tabler, Kassie Emmett, and Natalie Pawlowski were selected as the Lakers player of the game.

Coach Mallon commented, "I was pleased with our effort today. We are starting to come together as a team and I think we are getting to the point where we can compete with just about anyone in our Region. We still have work to do and we need to clean up some things on the field, but overall a good effort. I'm looking forward to watching us continue to develop - overall, a nice team effort." 

Next Up: The Lakers travel to play Lake Michigan College this weekend. The game is currently scheduled to start at 1:00 pm.
