Women's soccer drops season opener

The Lakeland women's soccer team traveled to Port Huron, MI to face off against the St. Clair County Community College Skippers today in Region XII action. In a game that was tight throughout, the Lakers dropped a 3-0 decision to the Skippers.  The teams battled back and forth throughout the first half before the Skippers broke through with a goal about 10 seconds after a corner kick. On the play, the Lakers were unable to clear before the Skippers tucked it away. The first half finished with the Lakers trailing 1-0.

The teams would again go back and forth in the second half until their was less than 10 minutes to play. On the Skippers second goal, the Skippers goalie would make a save on the Lakers Ashlen Horowski and then execute a quick counter down the field that led to a goal less than 10 seconds later. Less than 5 minutes later, the Lakers thought they cut the lead in half. On the play Shelby Nagy picked up a thru pass and beat the Skippers netminder only to have the goal called back on an offsides call. As the Lakers tried to press late, they would give up the third goal with less than 3 minutes to play. Lakers goalie Lillyan Agostine made 10 saves in the defeat.

Mallon's Mentions: "We are very proud of the effort by our team in game one. We started the match with 13 consecutive passes and played a very even match until we conceded the goal off the corner kick play. Everyone really put in a great effort."

Lakers players of the game were Carli Salatino, Ashlen Horowski, Kassie Emmett, and Shelby Nagy.

Next Up: The Lakers next match is at Lorain County Community College on Tuesday, August 29. The match is scheduled to kick off at 5:00pm.
