The Lakers women's soccer team played host to the Owens Express today at Laker Field and scored the go-ahead goal with 7 minutes to play in securing a 2-1 victory over their league rival. With the win, the Lakers record now stands at 2-2. Shelby Nagy got the Lakers on the board scoring 10 minutes into the game. On the play, Gabrielle Carley chipped the ball over the Express defenders allowing the opportunity for a partial breakaway. Nagy took the pass and shot the ball over the outstretched Express keeper. The Express were able to knot the score at one when they took a shot along the right sidelines that sailed into the upper part of the Laker goal. Much of the play for the half was in the middle third of the field. Neither team generated a lot of quality scoring opportunities, but neither team gave any up either.

The second half started with similar play to the first half as both teams battled to get an advantage. The Express had their best scoring chance with 13 minutes to play. Owens crossed a ball to the center of the box and there was a scrum between multiple players on both teams. On an Express attempt, a Laker defender tipped the ball before Laker netminder, Lillyan Agostine, was able to corral it to relieve the Express pressure. Moments later, the Lakers had a scoring chance as Zoey Coffman just missed putting away a rebound shot. A couple of minutes later, the Lakers just missed another goal as Carli Salatino struck a direct kick from about 35 yards out that rang off the lower half of the crossbar - going down - but not into the net. A minute later, the Lakers' Ashlen Horowski and Shelby Nagy executed a perfect give-and-go in the Express box allowing Nagy to rifle in her second goal of the match.

Lakeland outshot Owens 13-8.

Lakeland's players of the match were: Shelby Nagy on offense, Batoul Khaleefah at midfield, and Carli Salatino on defense.

Mallon's Mentions:  "Owens gave us a good match. We had some more scoring opportunities, but just weren't able to put it away. Good effort overall though. It was nice to get a home win and we'll look to build on that Monday."

Next Up: The Lakers will play host to the Lorain County Commodores on Monday, September 11. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
